Fontana Lake is on the Little Tennessee River located in Graham and Swain counties in North Carolina. The lake forms part of the southern border of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the northern border of part of the Nantahala National Forest. Short of a multi-day hike, Fontana Lake provides the only access into the most remote areas of the National Park. When the lake is at the normal summer level, a boat may be used to access remote trailheads.

This gallery is of a multi-day adventure in the area. Day one was a kayak trip across the lake from Flat Branch boat ramp to the Forney Creek Trail head in the Smokey’s. Then a short hike up the creek without the paddles to the Bear creek trial area for some off trail exploring. It was an absolutely beautiful part of the park! I will return!
Day two was a visit to the Road to Nowhere and some hikes along Noland creek.
